In my opinion. Articles like these make me kinda sad, but are in a way, very uplifting. Even though manuals are "obsolete", we'll(as in some automakers) still cling on to that one thing that some of us hold on to so dearly.

I think they're a form of resistance. While some people want to let Google and Uber work towards becoming the new Vanderbilt and Rockefeller, there'll be others who want to do it for themselves.

So here was my incident. I was in the 997. I was going into a right hand turn that has a curved right turn lane so you don't have to stop. I know this turn really well and have taken it very fast before with only a hint of traction control kicking in. I saw a BMW M Coupe and got excited so I attacked the corner a little fast.

I wasn't even going that fast though. My rear tires are getting worn and I think that was the problem. And I hadn't been planning on taking the corner fast so I wasn't fully mentally prepared for it.

I lost traction before even hitting the apex. The car got all sloppy. Even with PSM kicking in I got oversteer in the back and some weird stuff going on with the front tires.

I was pretty surprised by it. I applied some Oppo lock and got it straightened out after some wiggling.

Lesson: while a 997 is much easier to drive than an air cooled 911 it's still a 911. It will bite you if you're not careful so you better be ready for it. Especially if your tires are a bit too worn for attacking corners.

Haha yeah in the air cooled 911s it probably would have caused a crash. Good thing is that there was nobody behind me or ahead of me.

I once nearly spun out in the SC when my Dad let me drive it in high school. I wasn't even trying to go fast. I took a right turn at the same speed I would in my BMW but didn't realize that the rail road tracks are a much bigger problem for a classic 911 than they are a BMW. The rear tires hit the track while my front wheels were turned and the car did not like that AT ALL. The rear tires lost traction and I nearly had a heart attack.
